Backing Up Cloud Data

IT professionals frequently express a concern in regards to backup solutions for their data with cloud computing. Cloud providers will sometimes rely on proprietary technology for these back ups, which prevents users from being able to transfer data to another provider if ever necessary.  The following should help when it comes to backing up cloud data:

  • Open Source – Concerns about provider lock-ins can be eliminated by choosing a cloud service provider that uses open source technology. With open source technology, if you were to ever need to change providers, you data will easily transfer to an alternate location.
  • Third-party Backup – Most cloud hosts know the risks of keeping all of your data backups in the same location as your live data. Some of these hosts will provide you access to a third-party backup host.
  • Cloud Platform – Some users’ major concern is being in total control of their backups. A cloud platform as a service (PaaS) rather than software as a service (SaaS) may work better you if that is the case. With PaaS, you can control your own applications and data and you can send backups wherever you choose to.

Backing up your cloud data can be safe and easy with a little research and planning.
