A domain name is used to assign a location point or address to Internet web servers. They were created to be a more memorable and easy to spell address, rather than using the technical IP address. Domain Names are written from left to right, organizing the more specific information on the left and more general information on the right, similar to a person’s first and last name.

Part of having a domain name requires you to register the name with an organization called Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Registering your domain name grants you to rights to that name for 1 year. After one year you must renew your registration in order to maintain ownership of the same name.

The best thing to do when you are looking to register a domain name is to be prepared with a few different names you would like to use. Having just one name in mind is not recommended because chases are the name is already taken.

Once you own a registered domain name there are a number of things you can do with it. One of the most common and possibly the most obvious thing you can use your domain name for is to build a website on it.

You can also resell your domain name or put it to auction. If you are able to buy a domain name that others are going to want, you have a chance to make some serious money. The more popular or “hot” a domain is, the more money you are likely to get for it.

Another common use for you domain name to make money is parking your domain. When you have a parked domain, it means that visitors who search to your site will see a temporary web page. These temporary pages contain pay per click advertising that gives the domain owner money for every click or visitor to the site. All the domain owner has to do is let it sit.

Extensions, also known as top-level domains are the far right side of the domain name. There are a total of 18 different Generic top-level domain extensions available. The generic top-level domains include: .aero, .asia, .biz, .cat, .com, .coop, .info, .int, .jobs, .mobi, .museum, .name, .net, .org, .pro, .tel, .travel, and .xxx. Every country also has its own top-level domains used for specific sites. There are 3 US top-level domains that are .edu, .gov, and .mil.

Out of all the domain name extension available, .com, .net, and .org are the top 3. The reason they rank as the best extensions is because they are so commonly used today that most people automatically type in .com, .net, or .org when they are searching for a website without knowing what the actually extension really is.

There are ways to check to see if a domain name is currently available for your use. Most companies that provide domain name registrar services allow you to check and see what domains are available to you right on their website. A lot of these websites will also provide you with domain name suggestions if the one you were looking for has already been taken.

There are multiple different websites that allow you to search who owns a specific domain. WhoIs.com allows you to look up registration data like who owns specific domains. It also provides information such as when the domain was registered and when it expires.

    My preference is for .biz domains, this represents the domain having business industry. There are many top level domains available in the market, some of these are 7.biz, 9.biz & more

    Domain names are used in URL and make your website unique on the internet. They are organized left to right, on the left side there is more specific information and more general information is on the right side.
