Fighting Spam

Spam can in some way be worse than any virus and can cause a negative affect on your website. Fortunately, there are ways that you can fight against spam as long as you know the proper protocol. The following are some tips on how to fight against spam and protect your website.

Spam Filter – Depending on your web hosting package, you may already have a spam filter in place. They can range from basic protection to aggressive protection which you can adjust based on your needs.

Contact Forms – This may be a bit obvious, but one simple way to avoid spammers is to not let them see your contact information in the first place! Although it’s not completely effective, this method can absolutely reduce the risk of spammers finding you. Don’t place your emails or contact information anywhere on your website. Instead, use a contact form so that your users can still reach you.

Spam Proxy – A proxy sits in front of your mail server. It is similar to filtering; however it gets rid of spam before it is even processed.

DNSBL – Domain Name Server BlackLists. These are databases which are kept by different companies and organizations meant to identify servers known for sending out spam. This however is not always efficient because many spammers will use other servers to send junk out.

Whether you use one or all of the above techniques to fight against spam, any amount of effort is guaranteed to at the very least lessen the amount of spam you receive.
