This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to password-protect a directory in cPanel.
Password-protecting a directory will prompt visitors to the protected URL for a username and password. If the visitors don’t log in, they wont be able to see the continents of that directory.
Step 1:
Scroll down to the “Security” section.
Step 2:
Click the “Password Protect Directories” icon.
Step 3:
Click the “Go” button.
For these instructions, we will password-protect the media directory as our example.
Note: To open a directory, click the yellow folder icon. To select a directory (and in this case password-protect it), click the directory’s name.
Step 4:
Click on “Media”.
Step 5:
Click the “Password-Protect This Directory” checkbox.
Step 6:
Enter a descriptive name for the password-protected directory.
Note: This name will show up in the popup dialog window requesting the username and password.
Step 7:
Click the “Save” button.
The directory now requires authentication to access. This means visitors will be asked for a username and password.
Next we have to create one or more authorized users to access this directory.
Step 1:
Click the “Go Back” link.
Step 2:
Scroll down to the “Create Users” section.
Step 3:
Enter a username.
Step 4:
Enter a password.
Step 5:
Re-enter the password to confirm.
Note: You may also click the “Generate Password” button to have a maximum strength password automatically created for you.
Step 6:
Click the “Add/Modify Authorized User” button.
Note: You may add as many users as you wish here. Simply repeat the previous steps until you have finished creating users.
Note: To change the password of a user, you must delete and recreate it.
